Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners has been a major content in our diets. Ranging from teens to grownups, artificial sweeteners is consumed in one form or the other. Some of the artificial sweeteners approved by Food Safety and Security Authority of India (FSSAI) are: Saccharin sodium, Aspartame (methyl ester), Acesulfame potassium, Sucralose and Neotame. These are used in the manufacturing of soft drinks, diet foods and mainly sugar-free items.
It is important for us to know its effect on human body.

The sweetness of sugar, can be substituted by organic, inorganic and synthetic compounds that have a similar taste. The taste bud receptors on our tongue, that perceives the sweet taste are known as Senomyx. These receptors, recognize the sweet taste of the artificial sweeteners as sugar sweetness and sends a signal to the brain, saying something sweet(high-calorie food) is being eaten. However, these artificial sweeteners are low calorie products, which cannot be metabolized by our body. These compounds, simply pass out through our digestive system without being absorbed, making it an excellent substitute for sugar.

Despite being approved by the FSSAI and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), physicians have put forward a few side effects. They are:

  • They trick your gut: It confuses the brain to differentiate between a high-calorie product and low-calorie product, which in turn makes it difficult for the body to understand, when to absorb nutrients from high calorie food.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Your body, releases insulin for artificial sweeteners mistaking it to be sugar. This causes a spike in your blood sugar level and also prevents your body from producing GLP-1 (a hormone that controls blood sugar level.) This also causes you to feel hungry pretty frequently.
  • Increases the risk of diabetes: It increases the risk of type-2 diabetes at a young age.
  • Genetically modified:  Nothing that is genetically modified is good for health.
