Hyderabad: Gear Up For Battery Powered Bicycles

The Hyderabad City Traffic Police are set to introduce battery-powered bicycles in an attempt to maintain law and order during festivals, processions and surveillance at tourist spots. The traffic police officials said they might introduce the battery powered bicycles next month.

The battery-powered smart bicycle was developed by the students of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT.) The bicycle can run up to 50 Km in a single charge and has a 250 volts battery. The cycles take around one and half hour to get fully charged. The cycle has been designed keeping in mind the requirements and conditions of the traffic police.

The Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. V. Srinivas Rao said while researching about monitoring the problems in crowds, processions and tourist spots the concept of battery powered cycles came up.

Rao added, “The bicycle will be a mechanical assistance for the department, bringing down the usage of motor vehicles. It will be an environment-friendly electric bike.” Rao was quoted saying, “The major advantage will be its mobility and easy integration with the Global Positioning System (GPS.)”

Rao said the bicycles will be used for tourism as well. The patrol teams deployed to monitor tourist spots such as Qutub Shahi Tombs, Golconda Fort etc., will be given the battery-powered bicycles. The bicycles will also be used for monitoring Tank Bund, KBR Park and other similar spots in the city.
