Usha's Last Ride - A True Incident

A few months ago, a Traffic Police Inspector’s ego claimed the life of the 34-year-old Usha in Ganesha roundabout opposite BHEL headquarters in Trichy. Usha and her husband Raja (40) were en route to a colleague’s wedding when Inspector Kamaraj stopped them.

The couple initially thought of taking a bus from Papanasam but later voted against it. Thinking it would be a hassle taking the wet grinder, they bought as a present in a bus the couple decided to travel by bike. Unfortunately. The bike ride turned out to be Usha’s last.

Dhinakaran, Usha’s brother in law was quoted saying, “ The police first stopped them on the Tiruchy Thanjavur highway and demanded to know why he was not wearing a helmet. They argued back and forth for 10 minutes with an Inspector called Kamaraj, who then walked away. Raja thought the matter was over and started to ride away. Seeing this, the cop got very angry and began to chase them on another bike.”

Kamaraj is said to have allegedly caught Raja’s shirt in the middle of the road and demanded that they park the bike at the side of the highway. Dhinakaran said, “But with cars zooming past them, a pregnant wife in the back and a wet grinder in the front, Raja could not immediately stop the vehicle. He kept moving a little further hoping to find a gap to turn towards the left of the road.”

Kamaraj started chasing them again thinking the couple tried to escape. Kamaraj furiously kicked the bike hard; Raja lost control and the couple fell down on the road. Raja sustained heavy injuries while Usha succumbed to her injuries.

The enraged locals and motorists, who witnessed this incident blocked the road and demanded immediate action against Kamaraj. However, the policemen resorted to lathi charge as the protest lasted for a few hours.
